Fighter Interview
Hello, my name is Zhou Yongkang.
I am from the Qingdao Xinjiang Combat Club.
Q: Congratulations on your victory. How do you feel about your performance?
Zhou Yongkang: It was not easy to prepare for this fight, because I have been in Thailand for four months. As a newcomer to MMA. In the beginning, maybe I just changed to practice MMA, I didn’t have much confidence that I could win this fight. But my head coach told me that I can do it without any problem, to believe in myself that I am better than others. I’ve been working hard in training and my coach knows. So, I’m very grateful to my coach and the brothers who came with me this time.
Q: Were you training or competing in Thailand at the time?
Zhou Yongkang: I went to Thailand by myself when I was 15 years old to train. After staying there for two years, I had to return to China because of the Covid. After I came back, I was introduced to Qingdao Xinjiang Combat.
Q: What was your biggest advantage during the fight?
Zhou Yongkang: My biggest advantage is definitely my stand-up skill, as well as my height and reach.
Q: How did your opponent perform? Any strengths and weaknesses?
Zhou Yongkang: My opponent performed very well, determined and tenacious.
Q: Did you face any difficult situations during the fight?
Zhou Yongkang: Actually, the difficulties were not bad. This time lost more weight, I lost 13 kilograms in two weeks, and my body hadn’t fully recovered. The first two rounds went well, but in the third round, my body started to struggle to keep up.
Q: What was your mindset during the fight?
Zhou Yongkang: Because my teammate Kai Tangkai, and Barakin, Zhang Mingyang, Hu Yaozong, all these big brother level people, every day I train with them, every day I’m experiencing. They told me when I get in the ring, don’t spend too much time in the cage, look for the right opportunity.
Q: What are your next plans?
Zhou Yongkang: As soon as I can come to the next fight, I might be slightly injured in my legs now, I want to fight more and improve more.
Q: Are you confident of winning the championship?
Zhou Yongkang: My goal is definitely the championship. A soldier who doesn’t want to be a general is not a good soldier. Everyone’s dream can be the same.
Q: Is there anything you would like to say to your supporters?
Zhou Yongkang: I’m very grateful to my head coach, Liu Jinwen, and my three Russian coaches, Maga, Ali, and Anwarango. I appreciate their guidance and training throughout this journey. Every day has been a learning experience, and I want to express my gratitude to them!
